Electrical Resistance Heating (ERH) Thermal Remediation Technology

Safe, Effective and Proven Technology in all Lithologies

Electrical Resistance Heating (ERH) is an in situ, thermal technology that uses commonly available electricity and applies it into the ground through electrodes. These electrodes can be installed either vertically to any depth or horizontally underneath buildings, operating facilities, and in the presence of buried utilities. The technology is equally effective in soil and groundwater.

The technology was first commercially deployed in 1997 by many of the current TRS employees and can be deployed in a variety of applications. These include: underneath buildings, in active facilities and with public access, for chlorinated volatile organic compounds at concentrations indicative of DNAPLs and fuel hydrocarbons as LNAPL, in most types of lithologies (including bedrock), and varying contamination depths (now up to 135-ft bgs). TRS has 100% client satisfaction on all projects and a dozen of the commercial sites have received closure.

As a Thermal Alliance partner, Cornelsen undertook the first ERH demonstration project in Germany together with TRS Europe during the course of 2017.

A Perfect Record of Successful Performance with ERH

TRS staff have performed over 75% of the ERH remediation projects in the world. The ERH technology has been successfully and cost effectively implemented on both small and large sites, varying site lithologies (including bedrock applications), and the deepest applications.

TRS has unmatched experience using ERH for the remediation of soil and groundwater impacted by chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) and petroleum hydrocarbons. They have successfully cleaned DNAPL and LNAPL sites and have treated compounds in the boiling range of methylene chloride to solid grease. The more sites you clean, the more contaminant types and remediation challenges you experience.

No company has heated under more occupied or vacant buildings than TRS.   TRS has performed ERH cleanups that required heating beneath, or immediately adjacent to, a building or an area open to direct public access.  They have cleaned under commercial properties, retail shopping centers, industrial manufacturing facilities, empty warehouses, active fire lanes, railway maintenance yards, and adjacent to residential properties across the country.  On most of these projects they installed our ERH systems below grade to allow workers, pedestrians and vehicles safe and unimpeded access over the electrode fields.

TRS has performed ERH projects under the supervision of some of the environmental remediation industry’s most demanding clients, including in the US the DOD, DOE, USACE, and EPA.  They have created and implemented programs for source area delineation, sample collection and analyses, air monitoring, health & safety, and QA/QC that meet the standards of each of these groups.
