Operation

The economy skimmer incorporates a density float and a hydrophobic filter through which only LNAPL will pass.  The filter has an overflow for enhanced product recovery rates where the product thickness exceeds the height of the filter.

The float and filter assembly is installed within a PVC screen within which the float can rise and fall freely with changes in the water level.  The integral pump head is fitted to the top of the screen and pumps recovered LNAPL from the filter via a flexible tube connected to the base of the filter.  This tube hangs below the skimmer assembly to facilitate freedom of travel.  The pump operates by means of a single diaphragm.

Xitech High Performance Skimmers (ATEX)

All-in-one pump and skimmer assembly for 2” and 4″ wells suitable for high temperature and more viscous oils.

Remediation Applications

Similar to the Economy skimmers, the High Performance Skimmers are more chemically resistant and capable of resisting high temperature.  The High Performance Skimmer should be selected for heavier more resistant oils.

Operation

The High Performance Skimmer pumps incorporate a density float and a hydrophobic filter through which only LNAPL will pass.  For higher temperature requirements or more viscous oils, a modified “snorkel” inlet is used instead of the hydrophobic filter.  This will leave circa 30mm of LNAPL in the well.

The float and filter assembly is installed within a wire wrap stainless steel screen within which the float can rise and fall freely with changes in the water level.  The integral pump head is fitted to the top of the screen and pumps recovered LNAPL from the filter via a flexible heat resistant tube connected to the base of the filter.  This tube hangs below the skimmer assembly to facilitate freedom of travel.  The pump operates by means of a single diaphragm.

tip Tech Tip:
Remember, as LNAPL is removed, the water level rebounds UP. Position the middle of the tracking range at the TOP of the LNAPL layer. As the product is removed, the product/water interface will rise to this level.

Xitech DNAPL Pumps

Durham Geo FAP Plus™ & Fap Plus™ ZW

Designed to be connected to the standard or high viscosity skimmer assembly this pumps is designed LNAPL recovery.  Recovery of a wide range of products from light-end hydrocarbons (eg petrol/gasoline, diesel, hydraulic fluids) to more viscous products such as heating oils. For applications recovering products with higher viscosities, the F.A.P. Plus™ may be used with our high-viscosity rod skimmers or our density skimmers.

Choose the ZW version for large variations in the water table to reduce the risk of the water table overtopping the filter inlet and pumping water.

Pump on Demand (POD) ™

A remediation pump for sites with limited access to compressed air and/or power.

Remediation Applications

Connected to the standard or high viscosity skimmer assembly, this pump is ideally suited for sites with limited access to compressed air and/or power.  It successfully blends the benefits of a skimmer system with the “Pump on Demand” benefits of a top filling total fluids pump.

Key Benefits

  • The POD skimmer only activates once the pump body has filled with product and therefore uses air (power) only when necessary;
  • Positive displacement action uses equal amounts of air to product pumped (at pressure equal to discharge pressure);
  • This makes it ideal for situations where there is no mains power;
  • Can be used with bottle gas (nitrogen) or liquid nitrogen;
  • Can be fitted to existing DGSI skimmer assemblies.
  • Ideal for LNAPL recovery in 2” wells or greater;
  • Long 90cm tracking range (with skimmer assembly);

Operation

Installed underneath the skimmer assembly just like a Passive Skimmer Canister the pump operates exactly like the SRX Total Fluids Pump with the exception that only LNAPL enters the pump via the inlet on the Skimmer Assembly.  The pump uses an internal float mechanism which responds to the fluid level within the pump body.  As the pump fills with liquid the float rises to activate a mechanical lever which opens the compressed air valve which pressurises the pump and closes the upper liquid inlet valve thus discharging the LNAPL.  As the LNAPL is pumped out, the float falls again to the lower limit, closing the compressed air valve and opening the inlet valves.

DGSI Density Skimmers

Density skimmers are used when there is less than 450mm of fluid from the bottom of the well to the water/product interface.

Operation

These skimmers have a specific gravity of 0.95 and float in the water with the top inlet just above the product/water interface. The 2 in and 4 in sizes are for use in well casings with these nominal inside diameters. The 6 in and 12 in models are self-supporting and may be used in large diameter wells, open excavations and open water applications.

Note: Density skimmers are not Zero Water (ZW) compatible, therefore it is essential that either the F.A.P. Plus ZW conversion kit (TR-51699) or F.A.P. Plus pump (TR-516) be purchased.

DGSI Standard and High Viscosity Skimmers

The standard skimmer is used to recover gasoline, jet fuel and most diesel fuels. The high viscosity skimmer is used when the product more viscous, such as oils and is designed to be used with the following devices:

The standard skimmer is used to recover gasoline, jet fuel and most diesel fuels and is a highly versatile product designed to be used across the whole range of DGSI LNAPL recovery products.

Operation

The Standard Skimmer combines a density float, a special hydrophobic element, a product bypass, a hollow guide rod and a coiled hose.

The center guide rod allows the skimmer to travel freely in response to the water table changes. The skimmer is designed to float with the inlet positioned at the water/product interface automatically providing 90cm of skimmer travel. The density float is used to position the special hydrophobic element — the skimmer inlet — at the product water interface (see Tech Tip 3). The hydrophobic element uses a special micron pore size that is based on surface tension, allowing only product to pass. A larger pore size is available for use with higher viscosity products such as weathered diesel.

Specifications

Pumping rates through the hydrophobic element will be approximately 15 l/hr.

Pumping rates through the bypass filter will be approximately 45 l/hr.

The larger micron-sized elements may allow a small percentage of water to pass.

Maintenance: Biofouling may occur because the hydrophobic element is positioned at the air/product interface. If fouling occurs, the element can be cleaned using a soft brush or replaced by unthreading the bypass element and installing a new hydrophobic element.
