REMEDIATION TECHNOLOGIES

Your Partner For Process Remediation

Together we will review potential site and process hazards (HAZID), review any area classification for potentially explosive atmospheres and specify appropriate ATEX ratings and critical equipment for the final design review and HAZOP process.  In addition we can specify and supply and install any pipework, pumps, site infrastructure including security systems and fencing and, obviously, we will install, commission and maintain the system with a full operation service if required.

Telemetry for remote operation and interrogation and/or simple SMS alarms are standard.

The range of technologies we offer is often available as off-the-shelf stock rental systems.  Stock plant will often be modified to bespoke applications leading to significant cost savings relative to new build. The option for New design & build is available.

Key advantages to rental plant include reduced client investment and the flexibility to switch out deploy precisely the right system for the site conditions as they change

STAR & STARx Smouldering Combustion

STAR is an innovative in situ thermal technology based on smouldering combustion, where the contaminants are the fuel.  Cornelsen is proud to have been selected to support the STAR & STARx patent holders Savron Solutions in Europe.

Smouldering combustion is an energy-efficient self-sustaining combustion process that captures and recycles the energy released from hazardous materials to destroy them in an effective, controllable, and safe manner.

Active control of the combustion front is maintained by the air supply. This efficient recycling of energy is made possible by the presence of the porous matrix (i.e., contaminated aquifer) that is being remediated.

Partnered with Savron for their patented STAR & STARx in Europe.

Our team will support you through the whole remediation process.  Whether your project requires rental or purchase systems, the deployed plant is the result of a collaborative approach with you to define the performance specifications, evaluate the treatability of the aqueous and vapour waste streams and the influence of any background chemistry.

In-Situ & Ex-Situ Thermal Remediation

We undertook our first ISTR project in 2007.  Since then each passing year has seen an exponential growth in Cornelsen ISTR projects in the UK, Germany, France & Italy either directly for our clients or together with our thermal teaming partners.

We have now supported more ISTR projects and the widest range of ISTR technologies than any other UK company including:

  • Steam Enhanced Extraction (SEE)           Injection of steam through the formation

  • Electrical Resistance Heating (ERH):        Delivery of electricity to the subsurface generating heat through resistance

  • Thermal Conduction Heating (TCH).            Direct heating of the subsurface via convection from heaters installed in boreholes

Projects undertaken include deploying a combination of SEE & TCH as well as several Heat Enhanced NAPL recovery projects.

We are proud to have worked with ERM, AECOM, Arcadis, Tergeo and of course our Teaming Partners to deliver multiple ISTR projects in the UK, France, Italy & Germany.

In-Situ Thermal Remediation (ISTR) Snapshot

ISTR is an effective and rapid remediation solution which, over the course of the last 20 years has become a widely accepted source reduction technology with >99% source removal a genuine reality for all lithologies even bedrock.

The three main technologies described here (SEE, ERH & TCH) each have their strengths for particular lithologies, contaminants and project objectives with some overlap in applicability.  Furthermore the technologies can be combined in some non-heterogeneous site conditions.

Alternative strategies such as heat enhanced biodegradation or NAPL removal can be employed at considerably lower temperatures and therefore energy requirements.

STAR

The STAR process is sustained by the addition of air through a well to the target treatment zone and is initiated through a short duration, low energy “ignition event.” Once the process is initiated (ignited), the energy of the reacting contaminants is used to pre-heat and initiate combustion of contaminants in adjacent areas, propagating a combustion front through the contaminated zone in a self-sustaining manner (i.e., no external energy or added fuel input following ignition) provided a sufficient flux of air is supplied.

STARx

STARx uses the same patented process as the in-situ technology but is carried out in engineered soil piles placed on Hottpad(TM) systems. Hottpads are fully scalable and can be sized depending on treatment volume, available footprint, and treatment time requirements. These systems are ideal for stockpiles of contaminated soils, sites where surficial soils are contaminated, and for waste oils and sludges.

Remediation Feasibility Pilot Trials

Pilot Trials reduce project risk.  At a minimum, pilot trials permit effective specification and costing of a full-scale system.  It may even rule out the proposed remediation technology.

The benefits of pilot trials cannot be overstated

  • What vacuum is required?

  • What flow rates?

  • What is the radius of influence?

  • What concentrations can we expect?

Please call to discuss your project objectives.
